From Hell It Came is a 1957 American science fiction horror film directed by Dan Milner from a screenplay by Richard Bernstein, based on a story by producer Jack Milner.

Cast:

Tod Andrews (Voodoo WomanCircle of Fear TV series; The Baby), Tina Carver (The Man Who Turned to Stone)Linda Watkins (The Munsters TV series; Bad Ronald), John McNamara (The Return of DraculaWar of the Colossal Beast), Gregg Palmer (The Creature Walks Among Us; Kolchak: The Night Stalker; Scream/The Outing), Robert Swan, Baynes Barron (Phantom of the Rue MorgueThe Strangler), Suzanne Ridgeway (The She-Creature).

From-Hell-It-Came

The iconic Tabanga monster was designed by Paul Blaisdell (also known for his work on The She Creature, Invasion of the Saucer Men, Not of This Earth and It! The Terror from Beyond Space) but was manufactured by Don Post Studios. This was the second and last feature film to be produced by the Milner brothers (the other beingThe Phantom from 10,000 Leagues). It was released by Allied Artists.

Paul Blaisdell: “I designed the Tabanga the way I thought it should look in terms of the script, and the people that built it did a damn good job of reproducing a prop that was a nice concept and certainly an original one, but one that was very awkward. My hat goes off to the guy who had to act the part of the walking tree [Chester Haynes]. I think he did a helluva good job under the circumstances.”

Plot teaser:

Kimo, a South Seas island prince, is wrongly convicted of murder and executed by having a knife driven into his heart, the result of a plot by a witch doctor (the true murderer) who resented the prince’s friendly relations with American scientists stationed on a field laboratory on the island. The prince is buried in a hollow tree trunk and forgotten about until nuclear radiation reanimates him in the form of the “Tabanga”, a scowling tree stump. The monster escapes from the laboratory and kills several people, including the witch doctor, whom the Tabanga pushes down a hill to be impaled on his own crown of shark teeth…

Reviews:

“Many reviews of From Hell It Came, even those written by b-movie mavens, have been pretty harsh, and I’m not sure why. Of course it is a terrible movie, but you and I knew that going in, didn’t we? When watching this sort of movie I look for a preposterous story, crappy effects, poor acting, silly dialogue and, if all goes well, the result will include more than a little unintended humor. I can ask no more, and the Milner Brothers delivered.” B Movie Madness

“This incredibly awful, yet endearingly popular example of Bad Cinema bears some laughably wooden performances that rival the stiffness of the films walking radioactive tree trunk. The plot is inconsequential, even if the inherent racism is not. It’s Anglo ingenuity versus native superstitions in what has to be one of the worst pictures of all time.” Cool Ass Cinema

Tabanga-From-Hell-It-Came-1957

“It’s not the laughable monster, nor the absurd plot that is the downfall of this movie, though. After all, foam rubber monsters and outlandish stories are what great B-movies are made of. What really kills this film is it’s dragging pace and tedious dialog. Not even a racy shower scene with Tina Carver can invigorate the segments not featuring the Tabanga. Linda Watkins, in the comedy relief role of Mrs. Mae Kilgore, only manages to make the slow scenes more grating.” Exclamation Mark

“Once the Tabonga actually gets on its…er… feet… it seems to wander aimlessly, first from left to right, then from right to left, apparently happening on its victims at random. Sure, its a small island and all, but what should be a suspenseful quest for revenge becomes a tedious mosey for happenstance.” The Bad Movie Report

Choice dialogue:

“Why did I have to fall in love with a dedicated female scientist. She considers marriage some kind of prison.”

“Obviously locked doors mean nothing to the monster.”

‘They don’t belong here…’

The film had its world premiere on 23 September 2014 at Film4 FrightFest. Magnolia Home Entertainment is distributing the film in the US on Blu-ray under their Magnet Releasing label.

White Settlers film

Plot teaser:

It’s Ed and Sarah’s first night at their new home – an isolated farmhouse on the Scottish borders. This should be a new beginning away from their stressful London lives. And at first it is; come sunset they fall in love all over again on a wander in the woods. But as darkness falls, Sarah suspects they’re not alone, Ed goes to investigate and quickly, the evening becomes a nightmare. It suddenly dawns on them; they do not belong here. And they certainly aren’t welcome either…

Reviews:

White Settlers draws its influences from films such as Straw Dogs and Eden Lake, pursuing atmosphere and irrepressible terror over an over-reliance on blood and repetitive jump cuts. There will be few, if any, better British horror films this year and should therefore be compulsory viewing. ” The Horror Asylum

“Although there’s a fair amount of violence, White Settlers doesn’t take the easy route of heading straight for shock value, scoring points instead by psychological means; through relentless tension and building anxiety. Which is not to say it doesn’t have its average share of jolts and jumps, but wisely, they are applied sparingly.” Starburst

white_settlers_-_whitesettlers.com_grimfest

White Settlers’ first act establishes a solidly realistic tone, leading the viewer to expect that the film will venture to some pretty dark and extreme places. The setup opens up all sorts of possibilities for an intense and gruesome experience, but—perhaps due to budget constraints—the violence does not go as far as the audience may expect or hope for in a home-invasion flick.” Camilla Jackson, Fangoria

Screen-Shot-2015-08-19-at-10.10.18-AM-620x400

“Clearly constrained by its tight budget, White Settlers has the cramped look and feel of a TV drama. It still delivers some visceral thrills, especially in its latter half, but lacks the originality, depth or strong performances to transcend its formulaic genre trappings. It does not help that Sarah and Ed are such unsympathetic protagonists or that McIntosh and Williams are burdened with such wooden lines.” Stephen Dalton, The Hollywood Reporter

white

“Despite an amoral denouement that jars the final moments – in some senses it echoes of Eden LakeWhite Settlers is best viewed as a run of the mill home invasion movie.” Britflicks

“Horror can be a great genre for engaging with current events. It’s too bad, then, that White Settlers, a film much-hyped as the first independence referendum-themed horror movie, delivers neither decent genre thrills nor provokes much subtextual unease about Scotland’s relationship with England in the run up to the vote.” Alistair Harkness, The Scotsman

The Creature Walks Among Us

Creature-Walks-Among-Us

‘A city screams in terror!’

The Creature Walks Among Us is a 1956 science fiction horror film. It is the third and final instalment of the Creature from the Black Lagoon horror film series from Universal-International, following 1955’s Revenge of the Creature.

The film was directed by John Sherwood (The Monolith Monsters), a longtime assistant director, from a screenplay by Arthur A. Ross (Creature from the Black Lagoon; Satan’s School for Girls) .

Main cast:

Jeff Morrow (This Island Earth; The Giant Claw; Octaman), Rex Reason (This Island Earth), Leigh Snowden, Gregg Palmer (Scream).

Plot:

Following the Gill-man’s escape from Ocean Harbour, Florida, a team of scientists led by the deranged and cold-hearted Dr. William Barton (Jeff Morrow) aboard theVagabondia III. to capture the creature in the Everglades.

the-creature-walks-among-us6

Barton is mentally unstable and apparently abusive husband to his wife Marcia (Leigh Snowden), as he becomes very jealous and paranoid when Marcia is with other men. Their guide Jed Grant (Gregg Palmer) makes numerous passes on Marcia, with Barton becoming paranoid about the two.

creature_walks_among_us_01

Marcia accompanies Jed and Dr. Tom Morgan (Rex Reason) on their initial dive to look for the Gill-man, despite her husband’s fierce objections. During the dive, Marcia swims too deep and is overcome with the “raptures of the deep,” temporarily losing her mind, removing all her scuba gear. This forces Jed and Tom to abandon their hunt for the Gill Man to swim back and save her.

creature_walks_among_us_02

During the capture, the creature is badly burned in a fire leading to a surgical transformation…

Reviews:

“Without question the weakest film of the series, The Creature Walks Among Us isn’t entirely terrible – the early scenes of the Creature in the swamp are as effective as any in the earlier films (admittedly, some of them may well be lifted from the earlier films), and his final rebellion is impressive, though brief. But the remodelling of the Creature is frankly unforgiveable, leaving him looking more like Tor Johnson than the classic Gill Man.

It’s interesting to make him a sympathetic character (Barton is the real monster here), but we don’t get to see enough of him to really relate to him as a character, or to understand why he is so easily domesticated.

The cast do their best with what they have, but this sort of cinema was definitely on the way out by the time the film was released, and compared to what was being made elsewhere – not just by Hammer, but on films like Les Diaboliques – it must have seemed pretty hokey stuff. Nostalgia improves it somewhat, and fans of 1950s monster movies will probably find enough here to make it passable.” David Flint, Strange Things Are Happening

“All in all, it’s an interesting idea for a film, but also a rather desperate one, and that desperation is part of the movie’s undoing. The creature’s transformation is too far-fetched to leave so largely unexplained (or rather, to leave supported by so many muddled, inconclusive, mutually contradictory explanations) as The Creature Walks Among Us does.” Scott Ashlin, 1000 Misspent Hours and Counting

creature-walks-600x422

“For a film that runs at 78 minutes The Creature Walks Among Us is all over the place when it comes to pacing, with around 35 minutes dedicated to the chase through the Everglades (which recycles a lot of underwater footage from the first movie) and the bulk of the rest concerning itself with Dr. Barton chastising his wife for nearly getting raped (twice) by the menacing Jed.” Gary Collinson, Flickering Myth

tumblr_luw69tzadw1qzr8nao1_1280

“This one’s better than Revenge but that’s not a hard thing to be…and it’s a difference of degrees. If you’d like to see a once-promising horror franchise run itself down like an old watch The Creature Walks Among Us is defiantly your film. Everyone else: skip back to the original. Or do what I do and jump forward to one of the many, many, many other aquatic monster movies it inspired.” David DeMoss, And You Thought It Was… Safe (?)

Tasmanian Devils is a 2013 Canadian horror film directed by former child actor Zach Lipovsky (Leprechaun: OriginsDead Rising: Watchtower) from a screenplay by Brook Durham (Mammoth; Red: Werewolf Hunter; Bering Sea Beast).

Main cast:

Danica McKellar (Hack!Scooby-Doo! Abracadabra-Doo), Kenneth Mitchell (The Bequest), Mike Dopud (Alone in the Dark; BloodRayne; Final Destination 5), Roger R. Cross (The Chronicles of Riddick; The Strain; Re-Kill); Terry Chen (Bates Motel; Evil Feed; Godzilla); Apolo Ohno, Rekha Sharma.

Plot:

When a group of BASE jumpers enter into a forbidden portion of the Tasmanian wilderness, they didn’t foresee that one of their group would die in the process. They also didn’t expect for their friend’s blood to awaken ancient and gigantic Tasmanian devils that would swiftly seek to make them their supper.

Screen Shot 2015-12-12 at 01.18.02

The group finds some assistance in three park rangers that arrive to arrest the group for trespassing, only to find that they too are in danger of becoming the deadly beasts’ prey. One by one, people start to die…

Reviews:

“There are so many satisfying moments in this movie that it is easy to forget the low budget despite how cheesy everything looks. Everything about the movie that at the outset made me believe it would be just another Syfy crapfest eventually evolved into something great. Not just good or watchable mind you, but genuinely great.” Stupid Blue Planet

409314233_640

“Too silly to take seriously and taking itself far too seriously to have fun with, Tasmanian Devils needn’t bother anybody’s list of monster flicks this year.” John Noonan, HorrorNews.net

“There is little here that you haven’t seen countless times before. Annoying characters you can’t wait to see die: check. A clumsy and unconvincing love interest subplot: check. Incompetent direction and unconvincing special effects: check. It is fair to say Tasmanian Devils does little well but at least the pacing is brisk to help make sure it isn’t completely boring.” Adam Cook, Letterboxd

Little Devils: The Birth (1993)

littledevils

‘There is one birth announcement the world could do without.’

Little Devils: The Birth is a 1993 Canadian comedy horror film directed by George Pavlou (Rawhead Rex; Underworld) from a screenplay by producer Elliott Stein.

The film stars Russ Tamblyn, Marc Price, Nancy Valen, Wayne McNamara, Stella Stevens (The Manitou), Donald Saunders, Jerry Levitan, David Campbell, Henry Roth and Tania Leil.

Little Devils (1993)

Review:

There is only one thing in this world I like more than a Jaws rip-off: a Gremlins rip-off! From the cream of the crop (Critters) to the bottom of the barrel (Munchies), no matter how garbage a Gremlins rip is, I can’t help but have a good time. The needlessly lengthily titled Little Devils: The Birth is Canada’s contribution to the sub-genre.

Ed Reid (Marc Price) makes his living writing porno tales for some filthy rag — a filthy rag that everybody in this universe reads because everybody knows (and seemingly loves) his stories. Ed’s life is pretty okay. He has a pal called Doc (Russ Tamblyn). Doc hangs out with weird homeless people and can no longer get it up since his time as a med student cutting up cadavers. Despite his lack of sex drive, Doc still hangs out in strip clubs.

LittleDevils-DieGeburtdesGrauens-306x500

Through Doc, Ed meets Lynn (Nancy Valen), a super hot stripper lady who doesn’t take off her clothes when she strips. I can only assume Doc came to know Lynn through his sad strip club addiction, and her lack of nudity appealed to his sexless leanings. Ed’s existence isn’t all fun times with strip clubs, porno mags and weird homeless people. His vacuum-obsessed dominatrix landlady (Stella Stevens) is desperate to fuck him. Oh, and his upstairs neighbour, Lionel (Wayne McNamara), is moulding little devils out of living mud.

Little Devils (1993)

Lionel’s world is very much not peachy. It is, in fact, a total nightmare. His apartment is chaos. He’s addicted to lemon soda. A couple of scenery-chewing gangsters want to chop his fingers off because of a debt he owes them. At first, it’s unclear if Lionel is insane or an evil vengeance-fuelled geek. But once the tiny mud devils he’s made begin their murderous rampage, we learn who’s really in charge.

Little Devils (1993)

Even before the monster madness kicks in, I was quite taken with the cast and characters of Little Devils. No-one is necessarily good here, but everyone puts in a stellar effort. Marc Price hams it up something fierce. Even when he’s dancing, very much out of time, like a goof in his apartment or pretending to orgasm as Lynn shakes his hand, he is quite likeable in the leading role.

Wayne McNamara is equally fun as the sobbing, demented Lionel and gets the chance to turn into an unlikely protagonist in the film’s finale. Russ Tamblyn (The HauntingTwin Peaks) is as cheesy and lovable as ever, and Nancy Valen brings a rebellious 90s charm to the proceedings.

Little Devils (1993)

However, it’s the final half an hour where the goo and goofs are pummelled onto the screen. The little devils themselves are stiff and awkward with limited facial expressions, but they’re adorable as fuck. They each carry a different tiny weapon, which is a great touch. Though they lack the personality of a gremlin or even a munchie, their design is commendable and, more importantly, gooey.

Little Devils (1993)

Director George Pavlou, best known for Clive Barker-scribed Rawhead Rex (1986), keeps the action coming thick and fast. As the battle between humans and tiny monsters ensues, the music pounds out pulsating synth beats that would be more at home in an 80s film and blaring electronic guitars. People get set on fire. Monsters melt. All the action is captured competently and slickly.

Little Devils (1993)

I guess my tastes really don’t align to the users of IMDb. At this point in time, Little Devils: The Birth sits at a shockingly low 2.3 — a rating it is utterly, utterly undeserving of.

litt1993_03

While this is no Gremlins, Little Devils is a blast from start to finish. I went in expecting dull garbage, instead I found scratching my head about its poor reputation. I would take Little Devils over Munchies or even Ghoulies (1984) any day. I would, however, not take it over Ghoulies III: Ghoulies Go to College (1991), but who would? That’s the Citizen Kane of Gremlins cash-ins.

Dave Jackson, Guest reviewer via Mondo Exploito

Availability:

Sadly, Little Devils does not appear to be available on DVD outside of an obscure Brazilian release under the title of O Aniversário Do Demônio. Unless you can find a copy of this DVD, it’s VHS or nothing.

Acquanetta (July 17, 1921 – August 16, 2004), nicknamed “The Venezuelan Volcano” by her friend William Randolph Hearst, was a B-movie actress known for her exotic beauty.

The facts of Acquanetta’s origins are not known with certainty. Although accounts differ (some giving her birth-name as Mildred Davenport, from Norristown, PA), Acquanetta claimed she was born Burnu Acquanetta, meaning “Burning Fire/Deep Water”, in Ozone, Wyoming.

Apparently orphaned from her Arapaho parents when she was two, she lived briefly with another family before being taken in by an artistic couple with whom she remained until she made the choice to live independently at the age of fifteen.

Other, perhaps more accurate, accounts suggest her ethnicity was part-African American. For Universal Horrors: The Studio’s Classic Films, 1931 – 1946, director Edward Dmytryk informed the authors:

” … she had to get a passport and they [Universal] found out that she was from Philadelphia! After that, rather quickly, they found out that she was part-black – which today wouldn’t mean a damn thing. But in those days it still did.”

Acquanetta started her career as a model in New York CityShe signed with Universal Studios in 1942 and acted mostly in B-movies, such as Arabian Nights and The Sword of Monte Cristo.

Universal then attempted to create a bizarre female monster movie franchise with Acquanetta playing Paula Dupree, an ape woman, in Captive Wild Woman (1943) and Jungle Woman (1944) but despite their weird and lurid plots neither film was a box office bonanza. This didn’t prevent Universal from making a third entry but The Jungle Captive (1945) starred Vicky Lane in place of Acquanetta.

She received a major role and star billing in Universal’s Dead Man’s Eyes, a 1944 Inner Sanctum mystery film directed by Reginald Le Borg but her brief movie career was already on the wane.

After her contract with Universal expired, Acquanetta signed on with ‘poverty row’ studio Monogram Pictures but did not appear in any movies; she then signed with RKO where she acted in her only big-budget movie, Tarzan and the Leopard Woman.

Reviews:

“First, it was actually paced pretty well. I watch a lot of bad movies where I can’t wait for the credits to roll, but despite its subject matter and dialogue, I remained relatively interested in the film. Maybe it’s just because I think cryptozoology and cryptids in general are pretty cool, but seeing someone talk about it somewhat intelligently, despite being in a film called Chupacabra Terror, was surprising.” The Wolfman Cometh

“Where drive-in horror movies of the 1950s were either moderately creepy or sublimely ridiculous, this schlocker misses out by relying on cheap thrills and parodistic laughs … The gore may satisfy die-hard monster mashers, but the cheesy-looking creature isn’t fit to touch the gills of the Creature from the Black Lagoon.” Robert Pardi, TV Guide

Loch-Ness-Terror-Bestie

Loch Ness Terror, titled Beyond Loch Ness on the Syfy Channel, is a 2008 Canadian horror television film directed by Paul Ziller (Pledge Night) from a screenplay co-written with Jason Bourque. It was produced by Lindsay MacAdam and Kirk Shaw for Insight Film Studios

Main cast:

Brian Krause (Camel Spiders; Poseidon Rex; Plan 9), Niall Matter, Amber Borycki, Carrie Genzel, Don S. Davis.

Plot:

James Murphy (Brian Krause) is a rugged cryptozoologist, who thirty years earlier, during a trip to Loch Ness, Scotland, had a fatal encounter with the fabled “Nessie” creature that killed his father, research assistants, and left James with a deep facial scar.

Beyond_Loch_Ness2

Thirty years later, James is hunting for Nessie, when his search leads him to the sleepy town of Pike Island, Ashburn, on Lake Superior. He encounters Josh Riley (Niall Matter), owner of a bait shop. Josh’s ex-girlfriend, Zoe, is going camping along with Brody and two others on a small deserted island on the lake. Josh’s uncle, Sean, attempts to prove Nessie’s existence but is eaten instead. James hires Josh as a guide while his mother, Sheriff Karen Riley, eventually finds Sean’s remains. She begins to suspect that an underwater predator is on the loose…

Reviews:

“The Case Against: Nothing, unless you count bad acting, silly death scenes, jingoism, rampant product placement, and awful pseudo-science. But if you did that everyone in the movie industry would be out of a job.” Eileen “Raptor Red” Stahl, Something Awful

“This is a surprisingly gory affair with Nessie and her kids chomping down on every human they meet right from the ropy opening at Loch Ness. The main cast are reasonably good but some of the acting for the smaller parts is terrible. The film employs a lot of CG and sometimes it works reasonably well but for the most part it looks terribly fake. It is more fun than your average made for TV feature and if you like monster movies you might enjoy this.” Eat Horror

lochness30.3074

“Looking at the movie “beyond” the logic of that underwater passage from Loch Ness to a lake in the USA, I enjoyed it on a different level. It got high marks for the intelligence of the cryptozoologist. I am fascinated by how characters can stroll into films nowadays and declare themselves, “I’m a cryptozoologist,” over and over again … Beyond Loch Ness is a fun ninety minutes of escapism, especially for the cryptozoologically-minded.” Loren Coleman, Crypto Mundo

“I hate to admit this but Loch Ness Terror was a pretty fun, entertaining ride which certainly blasted the rest of the Sci-Fi Channel’s movies out of the water. It’s got plenty of Nessie action, has a decent pace and above all didn’t suck in all of the major departments.” Popcorn Pictures

Reviews:

“As expected from Ivan Cardoso, the style is intentionally trashy and much closer to comedy than horror. Most of the humour is provided by the banter between Nuno Leal Maia and Tony Tornado playing a doctor and a cop investigating the murders, but other strange plot turns are amusing too, such as the dramatic musical number literally bursting out of nowhere. There is also plenty of female nudity, of course…” Random Avenger, IMDb

Paul-Naschy-as-Dr-Moreau-Werewolf-in-the-Amazon-2005

” … most people are going to object to the humor because it’s simply not funny and it takes away from the horror elements but outside of this I think the film offers some cheap thrills. Naschy turns in a good performance in the role of Moreau and the director even allows him a few sex scenes. The supporting actors are actually better than you’d expect in a film like this. All of the actresses have very large breasts and often take their clothes off, which adds to the exploitation nature.” Michael Elliott, IMDb

Amazon-women-tribe-2005

“Naschy mostly gives speeches in his lab full of bubbling vials and when the material is as lowbrow as this you kinda feel a bit sorry for him. Still, Naschy is Naschy and since everything here is quite tongue in cheek you do respect him for being a professional about it. The rest of the movie is spent with boring elderly teens who do take their clothes off a lot and the bumbling incompetent people in charge of solving the mysterious murders in the jungle.” Joachim Andersson, Letterboxd.com

Plot:.

A glowing object, that seems to be a meteor, careers toward the Earth. It narrowly misses a young student who sees it as it falls into the forest ahead of him.

A couple of hours later, a young couple hears a noise in their basement and go down to see what it is. They are terrified and wrestled to the ground by a grey-green monster, subsequently known as the ‘Galaxy Invader’. The alien is then hunted by a gang of local drunken men intent on cashing in on the creature…

Reviews:

“Dohler takes a story that would have fit snugly but comfortably into his era’s even more abbreviated TV hour, and stretches it to meet 1985’s minimum definition of feature length. Even without all the time given over to forcing upon us an intimate knowledge of the woods around Perry Hall, Maryland, The Galaxy Invader would be one of the been-there-done-that-iest movies of the mid-1980’s. With all the arboreal padding, it becomes positively soporific.” Scott Ashlin, 1000 Misspent Hours and Counting

hqdefault

“Chock-full of homemade SPFX and a luscious ’80s synth soundtrack, The Galaxy Invader is a solid entry in the pantheon of Dohler, as it gains an ever-growing fan base. Though not quite as “epic” as The Alien Factor and not as “dark” as Fiend, TGI remains a fun, often surprising horror-fi adventure set in the woods in and around Dohler’s Maryland homestead!” Andy Lalino, Oddservations

Galaxy-Invaders-shotgun-blast-in-back

“The narrative actually revolves more around a violent lush, played by another regular Richard Ruxton, spearheading the backward hunt. Every booze-fuelled decision eventually drives him to be at deadly odds with his own family. Unlike Dohler’s other straight forward potboilers, Galaxy Invader offers a morality play over the destructive nature of alcoholism with a side of ugly alien, cheesy optical laser effects, and flashpoint explosions.” Basement of Ghoulish Decadence

Galaxy-Invader-in-bondage

“This one attempts to tell a more old-fashioned, well-intentioned story about a mother and her children fighting back against their brutal patriarch, but it takes too many detours and lacks focus. Combine that with mostly bad acting and dialogue, inadequate character development and poor pacing, and the effect is cardboard schmaltz. There’s also not enough man-in-a-rubber-suit alien action in here either.” The Bloody Pit of Horror

‘Never before… so much wickedness under one roof!’

House of Frankenstein is a 1944 American horror film starring directed by Erle C. Kenton, from a screenplay by Edward T. Lowe Jr., based on Curt Siodmak’s storyline. It was produced by Paul Malvern for Universal Studios as a sequel to Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man the previous year.

The cast includes a mad scientist (Boris Karloff), the Wolf Man (Lon Chaney Jr.), Count Dracula (John Carradine), a hunchback (J. Carrol Naish), and Frankenstein’s monster (Glenn Strange). Working titles — which included Chamber of Horrors (a reference to Lampini’s travelling horror show) and The Devil’s Brood — emphasized the multi-monster nature of the story.

Plot:

Dr. Gustav Niemann (Boris Karloff) escapes from prison along with his hunchbacked assistant Daniel (J. Carrol Naish), for whom he promises to create a new, beautiful body. The two murder Professor Lampini (George Zucco), a traveling showman, and take over his horror exhibit.

To exact revenge on Bürgermeister Hussman (Sig Ruman), who had put him in prison, Niemann revives Count Dracula (John Carradine). Dracula seduces Hussmann’ granddaughter-in-law Rita (Anne Gwynne) and kills Hussmann himself, but in a subsequent chase, Niemann disposes of Dracula’s coffin, causing the vampire to perish in the sunlight.

house_of_frankenstein_002

Niemann and Daniel move on to the flooded ruins of Castle Frankenstein, where they find the bodies of Frankenstein’s monster (Glenn Strange) and Lawrence Talbot, the Wolf Man (Lon Chaney, Jr.), preserved in the frozen waters. Nieman thaws out the two and promises to find Talbot a cure for the curse.

house_of_frankenstein_004

However, he is more interested in reviving the monster and exacting revenge on two traitorous former associates than in keeping his promises. Talbot transforms into a werewolf and kills a man, sending the villagers into a panic.

house_of_frankenstein_005

Niemann and Daniel save a gypsy girl named Ilonka (Elena Verdugo), and Daniel falls in love with her; it is unrequited, however, as Ilonka falls in love with Talbot. Daniel tells Ilonka that Talbot is a werewolf, but she is undeterred, and promises Talbot that she will help him.

house_of_frankenstein_006

Events reach a crisis point when Niemann revives the monster and Talbot again turns into a werewolf. The werewolf attacks and fatally wounds Illonka, but she but manages to shoot and kill Talbot with a silver bullet before she dies. Daniel blames Niemann and turns on him.

house_of_frankenstein_008

The monster intervenes, throws Daniel out of the window, and carries the half-conscious Niemann outside, where the villagers chase them into the marshes. There, both the monster and Niemann drown in quicksand.

Reviews:

“only a mild horror picture, more ludicrous than terrifying. The whole thing is a rehash of the fantastic doings of these characters in previous pictures and, since they do exactly what is expected of them, the spectator is neither shocked nor chilled.” Harrison’s Reports, December 23, 1944

” …this grisly congress doesn’t hit hard; it merely has speed and a change of pace. As such, then, it is bound to garner as many chuckles as it does chills. However, lampoon or no, put this item down as a bargain for the bogie hunters.” A. H. Weiler, The New York Times, December 16, 1944

” …when the script does work, such as the scenes playing out the love triangle between Talbot, Daniel and Illonka, the movie really hits the quality mark. Harking back to The Hunchback of Notre Dame was a very inspired touch. Indeed I can’t help feeling that there’s a truly great little movie in here trying to get out – and with another couple of drafts done on the screenplay, it could have made it.” Jim Moon, Hypnogoria

House of Frankenstein packs a lot of action, movement and story into a running time just over seventy minutes. Well worth a look for Boris Karloff, leering with his voice (Daniel’s death scream is actually Karloff from Son of Frankenstein) and J. Carol Naish’s sensitive if limited work as Daniel.” Terry Sherwood, The Spooky Isles

“The fifth in Universal’s series isn’t the equal of the first three, but it’s thoroughly enjoyable formula entertainment from a studio that knew exactly what it was doing.” Mike Mayo, The Horror Show Guide

“What makes the film fascinating is that it has such a nihilistic ending. For a good portion of the film’s running time we are watching bad people doing evil things. When we do eventually get to the love story the two people the audience might actually care about end up destroying each other. There’s no happy ending, all the main characters are dead and there’s no walk off into the sunset for anyone.” Camino Real, Cardigans and Tweed

” …demonstrates the director’s flair for breathless action and thrill sequences. The film has flamboyance to spare: The storm-swept jail break, Dracula’s pursuit and ultimate destruction, and the fiery climax (in which leading characters are killed off in rapid succession) are trenchantly realised.” Universal Horrors

jurassic-world-2-2018

Jurassic World 2 is a 2018 monster movie directed by J.A. Bayona (A Monster Calls; The Orphanage) from a screenplay co-written with Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World) and Derek Connolly (Monster Trucks).

The Universal Pictures/Amblin Entertainment film is currently in pre-production with principal photography set to begin in February 2017 in Hawaii and London.

The film’s budget has been rumoured to be $260 million, considerably more than the Jurassic World‘s $150 million dollar budget.

Bayona has commented: “…what we’re doing is a sequel to Jurassic World, but it’s definitely the fifth chapter of a longer saga. It’s very interesting. It’s always tricky, but you need to find a balance in what people expect to find, and the new stuff you’re bringing to the story. And I think the story is looking for a connection between Jurassic World and Jurassic Park — more than what Jurassic World did.”

Bayona has also told ComingSoon.net: “I think there’s a lot of possessiveness towards our creations. I think it’s very interesting where the new movie is heading. It’s so different from the other films, it talks a lot about the moment we live in right now. It’s darker… but at the same time it’s going to be a lot of fun. It’s a blockbuster, you have Chris Pratt, it’s a great adventure, but it’s very interesting the way the film is darker than the other ones.”

Main cast:

Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Toby Jones (Morgan; Berberian Sound Studio; The Mist), Rafe Spall (The Ritual; The World’s EndShaun of the Dead), BD Wong, Justice Smith.
